Belize Express Moving South Although there have not yet been any official announcements, it looks like the main water taxi on the island, Belize Express is planning on relocating its operations south, just north of the under construction Marriott Residences. It looks like they will have a parking lot and/or loading area entrance on Coconut Dr., which may help alleviate the additional traffic.
It is not clear why the use of the lagoon side terminal is still not being utilized as it was originally planned, but I am sure that additional costs and business profits have something to do with it. The lot was originally cleared last December and quite quickly. Construction just started in April and it looks like they are trying to finish by the end of this month.
Whether there will be an addition to the existing pier or dredging that will be required is certainly a question to be asked. Who is willing to answer may come under from those more concerned about the environment and public awareness as this is the second attempt in the past few years of the water taxi to relocate on the reef side of the island.
The Watermark I was able to get a tour of The Watermark Hotel (condominiums) last month and I am have put together a brief video of some pictures and information that I have gathered. There will be more information on my website, in the new developments section. They have their BTB license and are now open for business. Stop by the Sky View Lounge on the 6th floor, if you have a chance. The views from those heights are rare on this island, particularly so close to town. For more information, click here!
New Gas Station! If you haven't already seen the construction, just north of the bridge, the new gas station is on its way to completion. This will be only the 3rd cart use gas station on Ambergris Caye and it will be able to be accessed without going south of the bridge (avoiding significant traffic, at times). I'm not sure when it is due to open, but I'm sure it won't be too much longer.
"We Jammin" Beach Bar Opens at Playa de Sala Located approximately 4.5 miles south of San Pedro, Playa de Sala is an adults-only (18+) boutique hotel on the quiet shores of Tarpon Bay on Ambergris Caye. Although this hotel is not new, what is new is the new beach bar, "We Jammin"! There's a story behind the name and bar, but I will allow you to venture down and to see and experience it for yourself. I was invited down last month and took a few pictures of what you will see.
It's a great chill spot (I had been to the hotel before) away from the hustle and bustle of town.
For more information on the hotel and bookings, you can go to the website here.
Road Paving Begins The San Pedro Town Council has begun Phase 1 to removed dusty, flooded, and muddy streets in the San Pablo, San Marcos, DFC, Ellis, and Eiley subdivisions. This is being done by paving the roads, something that many residents have waited years for.
It was started at the gas station (south at the corner of Blake and Sea Grape Dr.) and will extend all the way to the entrance of the marina road.
New Playground in Central Park A new playground in Central Park, here in San Pedro was officially opened early this month adding a more updated and usable space for the residence and visiting guests to Ambergris Caye. The new playground features an added fenced in area to help better control wondering young legs that might stray to far. There are also two new seesaws that have been included to accompany the swings and other climbing features of the main structure. Be sure to stop by and check it out when in town.
