                                                 Winter is Coming

That saying is familiar with GOT (Game Of Thrones) fans, but also has a meaning down here on the island. With winter comes "High Season" and hopes that new tourist arrivals will ignite a wounded economy and allow a financial recovery to begin here in San Pedro and throughout Belize. Even though the latest SI has our curfew set to 9pm-4am daily through December 1st, it looks like bookings are picking up for the American Thanksgiving holiday, which is typically around the time that high season begins. Hurricane season officially ends on November 30th. I personally have family flying down for the holiday as we delayed the gathering due to last year's COVID-19 pandemic. I also have friends inquiring about the curfew and other restrictions as they are waiting to get the full experience of a holiday in Belize.
Southwest Returns and Additional Airlines Come to Belize
Southwest Airlines completed its inaugural flight back to Belize since the pandemic caused PGIA to shutdown on March 23, 2020. The flight was on November 7,2021  Back in June of this year, Southwest Airlines announced that it would be returning to Belize in November. This was after Alaska Airlines announced in May that it was starting new non-stop routes from Los Angeles and Seattle to Belize starting November 19th.
In July, Frontier Airlines also announced that it would be starting its own non-stop routes to Belize from Orlando and Denver. The first flight is scheduled to arrive on December 11th.
Rounding out the announcements, Sunc Country announced in September, that it would resume its seasonal flights from Minneaopilis-St. Paul direct to Belize on December 22nd. This will be the 10th city from the U.S. Flying to Belize nonstop.

Postive COVID-19 Cases FINALLY Start to Decline
Right at the end of June, the national number of positive COVID-19 cases started to increase. While I can't remember how many days had more recoveries than new cases, it has been very few for the following 4 months. Well, with the continued number of people getting vaccines and less social gatherings, that number has FINALLY started to drop. It started just as the month of October came to a close.
Hopes are now that we seemed to have peaked, the government will relax or lift the current curfew at the beginning of December when when the current statutory instrument expires.

NOTICE: It has just been announced, by the minister of health, Michel Chebat, that starting November 22nd from Sunday to Thursday, the curfew will begin at 10pm and end at 4am. On Fridays and Saturdays it will start at 11pm. The requirement to present a vaccine card before entering a restaurant has also been lifted.

Corona Del Mar Has New Ownership
As with many businesses in Belize and in particular, San Pedro, this pandemic has caused many to sell their businesses and move on to different ventures. I recently discovered that ownership had changed at the long running Corona Del Mar Hotel. More specifically, The Sea Horse Sports Lounge (the bar/restaurant, just off the beach), is being remodeled. In all honesty, many of the rooms are also being updated, in addition to the pool. I do have some sentimental ties as when I made my first trip to Belize, in 2002, the Coconuts Hotel, as it was called then, was also for sale
The sadder news is that some of the long time employees will not make it through the transition. I believe that a couple may have a restaurant venture nearby, but I have not confirmed that as of yet.
The makeover is supposed to be pretty quick and finished before Thanksgiving. It should blend in well with all of the new construction on the south side of town
