International Airport Reopens October 1st On August 28th, the Prime Minister announced the planned reopening of the Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA) on October 1, 2020. United and American will have 5 flights a week and Delta is to start service on November 20, 2020. Southwest airlines had already announced that it did not plan to continue service until 2021. Tropic Airlines will have international flights from Cancun, Mexico starting Oct.12th. Also, Avianca will also start flying from select destinations.
Active Coronavirus Cases Declining The number of active corona virus cases in the country of Belize have been declining steadily for the past week. This was after a spike occurred late July/early August. This keeps hopes alive that the international airport will open as scheduled October 1st without any other delays. San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, which was initially leading the spike, now has less than 100 active cases and that number is also dropping. While some people still are not obeying the rules, the majority are and that is having an effect of controlling the spread. For more details click here.
Guidelines for Visiting/Returning to Belize There still has not been an update to any new guidelines for returning to Belize as a property owner or long term leaseholder, but there are many more options for Gold Standard approved hotels.
The long mentioned health app has still not been released and the prime minister mentioned a few weeks ago that the actual entry requirements might be changing (possibly getting rid of the tracking bracelet), but no one knows for sure. With the addition of more Gold Standard hotels, some owners/seasonal visitors are wondering if a hybrid plan might be created that might all someone to come in as a visitor and stay at a gold standard hotel and then move on to their own property or a property that they might be leasing. This would particularly help since the government has been slow to responding to applications that have been submitted for re-entry from the group of those returning to their properties. If the flights are not full, this plan would make sense as it would probably put more money into the economy than a person or even group staying for only a week. I see the plan as an additional boost to the economy and one which would allow more workers in the industry to be rehired. Happy Independence Day to Belize September 21st is Independence Day in Belize. This year the country will be celebrating its 39th year! Although celebrations will be much different this year (mostly virtual), it still is a joyous time throughout the country. Here is to the country and people that I love and to all of those waiting to get back inside its borders. "Happy Independence Day"!
